Thanks to a fundraising campaign by Maria Nila for The Perfect World Foundation, $110,000 has been raised to build a butterfly restoration greenhouse at Nordens Ark and create 4,000 m² of flower meadows to benefit pollinators and endangered butterfly species.
The butterfly nursery is designed to provide shelter for endangered species. Since butterfly eggs need to overwinter at approximately -4 degrees Celsius, a special freezer, originally intended for storing caviar, is being used, making it ideal for butterfly egg storage.
As part of the project, suitable areas are identified for restoration to support the critically endangered Scarce Large Blue butterfly. By creating dry and sunny environments, conditions are optimized for the butterflies to thrive. Red clover, field scabious, and common knapweed have been planted to prepare the wildflower meadows.
A diverse flora of nearly 30 native plant species is sown in the meadows, which are carefully tended to ensure a blooming environment that benefits butterflies and other pollinators.
The Scarce Large Blue butterfly is one of the species prioritized for breeding. Orpine, the host plant for this butterfly, has been planted to facilitate reintroduction efforts, and butterflies are being released to strengthen populations in natural habitats. Additional initiatives are also planned to reintroduce the species in more areas across Bohuslän.
