Used tennis balls become art – raising awareness for biodiversity during Nordea Open

During the tennis weeks in Båstad, The Perfect World Foundation highlights the importance of biodiversity through the campaign Biodiversity Match. In a glass box on-site, used tennis balls are being collected, which will later be transformed into a sculpture of an elephant.

Each year, around 350 million tennis balls are discarded worldwide. Now, The Perfect World Foundation aims to turn this waste into something meaningful – while also raising awareness for the world’s wildlife and the biodiversity currently under threat.

An initial bid of SEK 50,000 has already been placed on the planned elephant sculpture, and several well-known tennis players will sign balls that will be included in the final artwork. The sculpture will be created by artist Emilio Sheikhan from Megalodon Creations.

Proceeds from the sale of the tennis-ball elephant will go to Små Lirare – an initiative founded by Swedish tennis legend Magnus “Gusten” Gustafsson.

– “We want to reach new audiences and increase engagement in biodiversity among the general public,” says Ragnhild Jakobsson, CEO and co-founder of The Perfect World Foundation.
